Fabulous Week!

Thea Louise and Jacob Luke
Christening day 16.8.15

Wow what an amazing week I have had celebrating my twin eight month old grandbabies christening last Sunday, they were so good, content and happy, they even managed to have the vicar laughing, so full of smiles and joy, making me the proudest nana in the world. I will confess since their arrival my world has been filled with smiles, even when I'm grumpy they can turn my miserable face into happiness, especially when they are being cheeky.

I adore spending my free time with these little monkeys.

I have also celebrated my birthday, yes 21 again, I wish! No actually I am happy being the age I am 41, having learned so many new things about life, writing, reading and being where I am in my hobby, signing up for book signings after being overwhelmed and humbled at the Birmingham signing in July, it made me realize just how much my writing means to me, not only that meeting some wonderful new people, authors, bloggers, readers, just amazing and cannot wait to experience it all again.

I have also received the cover for book 2 in the Innocence series 'Innocence Of Love' truly magnificent and cannot wait to share it with you all, but will be doing that closer to the release date. Also heard from my editor who is loving the book. Also warms my heart when someone says something good about my book.

The innocence series will come as

Book 1. Innocence OUT NOW
Book 2. Innocence of love COMING SOON
Book 3. Breaking Innocence
Book 4. Return To Innocence

Excerpt

He had never been alone, but he could imagine how lonely it would be without friends or family to support or help you in your hour of need.

“Yes, I agree. But you must remember you caught her in a desperate situation. I am sure she might have still jumped and taken her life regardless of your words, they wouldn’t have changed her actions, especially if she felt that low. We all hit rock bottom and some people manage to take their lives, but clearly something was preventing her from doing so.”

“Yes, but I believe in helping someone when they are at their weakest and she is, not that I have put myself out in the past. If anything, I have stayed well out of any personal issues unless it affects the job,” he added staring at Ross. “And yes, there was a serious reason for her to stop her actions. And yes, I will admit I had to convince her jumping would not be the answer, but the poor girl was in clear distress, sobbing her heart out and all I could think was about her jumping and me having to jump in after her. I would have, of course. There was no way I would stand by and watch her take her life, and not just hers.” Calvin closed his eyes and sensed her grief.

“What do you mean? Not just hers!” Ross asked.

Calvin turned back to look at him.

“She is expecting.”

He watched Ross widen his eyes in shock.

“What?”

“She is seven months pregnant. She has nothing, and there is no chance of her getting a job. I would agree with her no one would take her on in her condition.”

“Bloody hell, Calvin, why the hell didn’t you mention this earlier? Here I’m thinking she is some sad bitch, full of self-pity and yet you are dealing with an emotional expectant mother. Did you say her parents lived in the village?”

“I think so, she’s being vague,” he said, cocking his head to the side. “She denied it when I asked her in the pub, but after speaking to her it sounded certain they do live here.”

“And you assume that by?”

“She mentioned she’d been to her parents’ house and they slammed the door in her face. I am not totally stupid. She tensed up and didn’t wish to answer all my questions which, in reflection, was understandable. She’d been through so much I didn’t wish to argue with her, and I could see she was tired and had the weight of the world on her shoulders which wouldn’t be good for the baby. I want to try and get her to talk to her parents again. I feel it is my duty.” He looked at Ross, he could see him thinking hard about the news he had received.

“And you’re certain her parents live in the village?”

“Yes, they must or very close!”

“Did she grow up here?”

“I assume so.”

“Do you recognise her?” Calvin tilted his head to the side when Ross continued to bombard him. “Do we know her parents?”

“For God sake, Ross, stop with the twenty million questions. I didn’t wish to push her. All I cared about was getting her rested, somewhere safe to put her head, and think about a few things.”

“Do you think she’s unpredictable?” Stop with the questions for goodness sake.

Calvin shrugged his shoulders unable to honestly answer the question.

“My goodness, Calvin, you really need to tread carefully. She might see you as an easy target and be looking for someone to take on the role of fatherhood.”

“Hang on. Don’t talk rubbish. I am trying to simply, help her out. She needs help and not only that, but she talked earlier about giving the baby up for adoption,” he told him needing to clear the facts.

“Adoption. That might be a wise move, if not in foster care.”

Calvin turned his head and looked disgusted at him. He understood it appeared the reasonable option at the moment, but sensed it wasn’t a decision to be taken lightly. Much thought needed to go into handing a baby over. There was no way he could ever hand his baby over, but then his life wasn’t at rock-bottom.

“Don’t look at me in that way, clearly she has nothing and putting the child in a safe environment until she gets back on her feet would be a wise move. I have seen women think they can cope and end up in serious trouble, some even turning to desperate measures.”

“Are you crazy? How can a mother be expected to give away her child that she has carried for nine months. That is ridiculous,” Calvin snarled at him.

5 Star review

Well I’ve enjoyed all of Holly ‘s previous books ,but this one was written in a completely different direction to her others . I wasn’t sure what to expect . Well what can I say other than ‘when is book two out’ . Loved it from beginning to end , you could feel both of their pain on the decisions life had put in front of them .not sure where to go who to turn too, yet she came through it all and is still fighting. What a roller coaster ride she had ,then after all those years she meets a man who seems to care about her ,like no one has for such a long time ,only to find he was the someone she had to run away from ,frightened he would disown her like her mother did . Bringing her mother to mind as someone I would like to disown , treating her daughter the way she did ,leaving her homeless , helpless on the streets vulnerable .while she carries on leading a normal life .. what amazes me is they all feel there suffering more ! They haven’t lived the life of hell she has ,quitting her family ,giving something precious up ..well without telling you the whole story , this was a book I enjoyed from beginning till end ….

Book Release Blitz For Innocence

Wow, time is just rushing by I cannot believe we are already into August and have overheard people talking about buying Christmas presents, personally I buy like a week before, leaving everything to the last minute, but this year I have plans, big plans to get organized.

I have this month some amazing events my grandbabies. I am grateful enough to have twins a girl and boy and they have a big day approaching their christening, I cannot believe they are already eight months old, rolling over, attempting to sit on their own, their smiles on their cheeky faces is enough to melt my heart. My daughter brought a t-shirt for my grandson saying 'mum says no but nana says yes' I will confess once I see them, I just give in, well what's the use in being a nana if you cannot spoil them? I have my own birthday coming up with a holiday and fingers crossed me and hubby are going camping. Yes, I love camping, we have found a super spot close to York England where no under sixteen's are allowed, a small idyllic setting with a large fishing pond, my hubby gets to fish while I sit and write or read with nothing but the sound of the birds and the blowing of the trees to annoy me. My idea of heaven!

Where am I with my books? Well I am super excited as I have sent of the cover art questions to my publisher for the front cover of Innocence Of Love, book 2 in the Innocence series, now with book 2 looming in the background and with the editor its soon going to be hyping up, exciting times.

Now first, I have book 1 to shout out, get out in the big wide world and I have teamed with Book Pimpers to do a Book Release Blitz five day book tour to celebrate the 1st book in the series Innocence.

I am calling on author, bloggers, readers, anyone who might be able to precipitate in the tour, even if its just a tweet, anything just to help boost for this sweet adult romance series, that's full of emotion

Review of Amazon US

Wow! Innocence is an emotionally-charged read from the first page to the last. I could not stop reading. This is not a pretty story, but one of rough, edgy feelings that had me sheading a few tears. I fell in love with Calvin, a man who is not afraid to show his feelings and acknowledge his pain. While this story has strong romantic elements, it is a tale of the consequences of decisions made in the past and how they affect Kacey’s life irrevocably. I look forward to continuing her life’s journey in the next books in the series.

Now to take part all I ask is for you to sign up by using this link Book Release Blitz for Innocence. I look forward to any help received.

Happy reading! Happy writing!

Spotlight The Penhallow Train Incident by M. S. Spencer

Thanks so much for having Rachel and Griffin and all the folks from Penhallow on your blog today, Holly! I’d like to introduce your readers to Griffin Tate, hero, retired Middle East history professor, and certified curmudgeon. He also has a pet theory about Middle Eastern recipes.

It is generally accepted that the similarity among many dishes found from the Horn of Africa to Kazakhstan is due to the influence of the Ottoman Turks. Turkish food, some would argue, represents the epitome of Middle Eastern cuisine. However, Griffin, hero of the Penhallow Train Incident has a different theory, worth considering for those of you interested in how recipes travel. A retired Middle Eastern history professor, he hypothesizes that dishes such as çaçik (yogurt cucumber salad) or tabbouleh (bulgur and tomato salad) actually came from the south and west and not from the north and east. In other words, perhaps they arrived with the cooks in the Queen of Sheba’s train when she visited King Solomon.

A little lagniappe: my recipe for çaçik (pronounced jajook)

RECIPE ÇAÇIK (TZATZIKI):

1 cup plain (full-fat or 2% yogurt)
1 clove garlic
½ teaspoon salt
2 cucumbers
2 tablespoons fresh or dried mint, or a combination of both
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon black pepper

1. Mash garlic.
2. Peel, seed, and slice cucumbers thinly. Laying them out on paper towels, sprinkle with salt and leave for half an hour. Squeeze out excess liquid. Chop or julienne as you prefer.
3. Mix all ingredients together and chill.
4. Garnish with fresh mint leaves. Serve with pita bread.

Serves 4-6.

BLURB:
In the sleepy coastal Maine town of Penhallow, a  stranger dies on a train, drawing Rachel Tinker, director of the Penhallow Historical Society, and Griffin Tate,  curmudgeonly retired professor, into a spider’s web of archaeological obsession and greed. The victim’s rival confesses that they were both after a map to the Queen of Sheba’s tomb, and with his help they set out to find it. Their plans are stymied, however, when a tug of war erupts between the sheriff and a state police detective who want to arrest the same man—one for murder and one for bank robbery. It falls to Rachel to solve both crimes…and two more murders, if she is to unlock the soft heart that beats under Griffin’s hard crust.

EXCERPT (G): WE MEET GRIFFIN

         “Another Geary’s, Rachel?”

“What? Yeah, I guess so. Just to keep you company, Maude.”

“Thanks.” Her companion, a woman of about sixty with close-cropped, iron-gray hair and the beginnings of jowls, gave the word all the sarcasm she had available. The bright brown eyes that reminded Rachel of an intelligent squirrel sought out the waitress. “Hey Katie, can you bring us a couple more?”

The waitress, a compact brunette with a wide grin, brought two bottles over. As she uncapped them, she nodded at the window behind the two women. “Looks like we’re in for a blow.” Rachel and Maude followed her gaze to Penhallow Harbor. The sky to the north held piles of white cloud, cascading down the cliff to hover over the mouth of the river as it flowed into Penobscot Bay.

Rachel stared at them dubiously. “They don’t look all that threatening to me.”

Katie shrugged. “Ask Griffin. He considers himself our resident weather expert.” All three shifted to stare at the tall man seated at the bar, his back to them. The cap, flannel shirt, and worn trousers with suspenders should have signaled an old salt, grizzled and wrinkled, but they knew better. Griffin was only about fifty, but he liked to pretend he was time-worn and crusty. It rarely worked. Any vulnerable woman who took note of his strong chin, deep blue eyes, and thickly curling, salt-and-pepper hair, would immediately recognize a sexy man with depths of feeling only a special strategy could penetrate. Add to that a barrel chest, long-fingered hands, and shapely legs, and you had what Maude described as a latter-day Prince Valiant—“Only without that stupid hairdo.”

Griffin twisted on his stool. “Cumulus. Five thousand feet. They’ll pass out to the bay.”

Katie shook her head, but Rachel noticed a gleam in her eye. “No sirree, those are storm clouds. You folks from away can’t read ‘em like we do. See that gray mass over there by Young’s?”

“Huh.” He peered at it, his eyebrows wiggling. “Most likely smog.”

“Smog! That’s ridiculous. How could we have smog in Maine?”

“Wood fires.” The man turned back to the bar.

Maude rolled her eyes. “Griffin gets less verbose every day.”

Rachel demurred. “To be fair, he’s never been much for words.”

“True. Hardly said two or three since he arrived in Penhallow…how long ago? Two years? Wait, wasn’t that just about the time you moved here?” She winked. “You sure there was nothing going on between you two down at Queenstown University?”

Her companion glared at her. “I told you before. I didn’t know him then. He was a professor of Middle Eastern history at the Institute and I was a lowly instructor in Anthropology in the college. Paths like ours never crossed.”

“Institute?”

“Institute of Higher Learning.” She raised her voice. “It’s a glorified think tank for the most eminent scientists and academicians. Gives ‘em an excuse to laze around dreaming up inoperable systems and unworkable theories to gum up our lives.”

“Whoa, somebody has a chip on her shoulder.”

“I can’t help it.” Rachel pondered her former colleague, his head bent over his plate, and whispered, “Griffin was a prick then and he’s a prick now. Too bad he’s so handsome.”

Maude sniggered. “Yeah, too bad.”

The subject of their abuse did not react and after a moment the two women returned to their beers. When Katie arrived with two plates piled with lobster rolls, French fries, and coleslaw, Rachel asked her, “So, have they identified the corpse yet?”

The waitress nodded, her eyes alight. “Yeah—Sheriff Quimby was in this morning. He says the guy was a foreigner—Omar something. I couldn’t possibly pronounce his name. Some kinda Middle Eastern type.”

Maude glanced toward Griffin. “Middle Eastern, huh? Hmm. And he was shot, you say?”

“That’s what the sheriff says. Shot with a .45 caliber—just like the ammunition in Elmer’s and Hank’s guns. Only theirs were blanks. Somebody used real live deadly bullets.”

“Gracious me.” Maude dunked a French fry in ketchup and splashed Tabasco sauce on it. “So how come no one heard the shot?”

Rachel snorted. “Maude, hello? Elmer and Hank were banging away at the same time. Come to think of it, the murderer must have planned it that way.”

“Oh, really. Now you’re Miss Marple. What makes you think it was murder?”

“Well, what else could it be?”

“Suicide? Accident?”

Rachel showed these suggestions the disdain she was sure they deserved.

Katie had remained standing by their booth, ignoring the increasingly desperate signals from the two tourists at the next table. “Say, Rachel, weren’t you taking tickets for the excursion on Saturday? You must have seen the victim. What did he look like?”

Before Rachel could answer, they heard an angry growl from the bar. “God damn it, can’t a man eat his lunch in peace? God damn ghouls around here.” Griffin scratched his stubbly chin and pointed a fretful finger at the women. “You’d think no one had ever been killed before, the way you people go on and on.”

Rachel, enchanted by the way his eyes shimmered in the sunlight, didn’t respond. Maude snapped, “Professor Tate, just because you’re an old roué doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a little mystery. Not much happens in Penhallow after all. We’re entitled to some excitement.”

Griffin bristled at her. “A man is dead, Maude. This isn’t a movie.”

“Well,” she bristled back, “At least he was from away.”

Griffin gave her a long, hard look and, before turning back to his plate, muttered, “Like me.”

For some reason his words struck hard at Rachel’s heart. She couldn’t see his face, and knew it wouldn’t show the hurt anyway, but she could feel it from across the room. To a Mainer, anyone who couldn’t trace his Maine lineage back to at least the French and Indian War was considered “from away.”
